The Anglonordic Biotech Conference warmly welcome Spain; the conference Guest Country 2010. Currently, Spain continues to experience significant stimulus and dynamism regarding creation, development and innovation in projects within the biotechnology industry. Thanks to a close and growing collaboration among the public sector dedicated to R&D, government agencies and the production network, the number of companies with activities related to biotechnology reaches close to 600. Each year, there are an average of 12 biotechnology spin-offs deriving from new discoveries in public research laboratories.

Between 2000 and 2006, turnover for the Spanish biotechnology industry grew by 200%, and during the same period direct employment increased by 750%. This macroeconomic impact has been directly reflected in the progress and impact which the industry is having on the healthcare sector, which has great clinical and therapeutic importance. More than 320,000 patients were treated with biotechnology products in 2006, with 50% of the treatments assessed as highly successful.

Spain positioned itself as the most dynamic country in terms of biotechnology advances in 2006. This is thanks to a 15% rise in private expenditure on R&D and the increase in public investment promoted by the Ingenio 2010 Program and more recently by the 2008-2011 National R&D&I Plan.
